New York (GaeaTimes.com) - The famous “shooting stars” of August will be visible in full swing tonight, August 12, 2010. The Stargazers in Halton will have feast of eyes as the Perseid meteor shower, which radiates from a point in the Perseus constellation, will be visible tonight.
The Government has asked people to enjoy the sight at Gatewarth Nature Reserve near the Ferry Tavern pub in Penketh. If the weather favors Pex Hill Observatory and Runcorn Hill are places people can enjoy the scene.
This meteor is due to Earth’s passing through the debris trail of the Swift-Tuttle comet which makes a 130-year orbit around the sun. The phenomenon often peaks at 50 or more meteors blazing through the sky every hour. That’s why the August Shooting Stars are considered best by the aces.
The meteors have tremendous velocity as they cut a path about 65 miles long burning up to 56 miles above Macay Lake at northeast of the town of Warrior said a NASA official. “The meteor was about six times brighter than the planet Venus and would be classified as a fireball by meteor scientists.” quoted the Anderson.
As the meteor has a relatively low approach in the sky and due its long shallow path meteor has been called an Earth grazing meteor by the experts. The earth grazing meteors are the debris of rocks that enter into the atmosphere of earth at a low angle as noticed by the watchers and seem to scoot slowly and dramatically along the horizon.
To witness the event many sky gazers are collecting at the places which are appropriate to watch the astronomical phenomena. For those who cannot book a ticket, can view it on internet.
