MICHELLE TRACHTENBERG and JAMES VAN DER BEEK are the latest U.S. TV stars looking for work - their medical drama MERCY has been cancelled after its first season.

Trachtenberg stars as a nurse in the hospital series, featuring Van Der Beek in a recurring role as a womanising doctor.

But chiefs at American network NBC have declined to commission a second series of the show, which launched last September (09).

The news comes after the recent cancellation of a number of high-profile TV shows, including Hayden Panettiere and Ali Larter’s hit NBC series Heroes, and long-running cop drama Law & Order.

And network executives at ABC have followed suit with their own TV cull, axing Zach Braff’s medical comedy Scrubs, sci-fi drama Flashforward and sitcom Better Off Ted in recent weeks.
