Mitchell is honorary chair for ballet competition
JACKSON, Miss. — Arthur Mitchell, founding artistic director of Dance Theatre of Harlem in New York, has been chosen as the honorary chairman of the USA International Ballet Competition.
His selection was announced Tuesday by the organization.
The competition, which takes place every four years in Jackson, Miss., will be held June 12-27 at Thalia Mara Hall. Dancers will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals, cash awards, company contracts and scholarships.
Mitchell, 75, was awarded the National Medal of the Arts in 1995 and received a Kennedy Center honor in 1993. He performed with the New York City Ballet for 15 years.
