‘Birdie’ ends its limited Broadway run Jan. 24

NEW YORK — The Broadway revival of “Bye Bye Birdie” will be saying goodbye in January.

The Roundabout Theatre Company production will close Jan. 24 at the Henry Miller’s Theatre after the contracts of its leading actors, John Stamos and Gina Gershon, run out.

Roundabout artistic director Todd Haimes says he had hoped to keep the musical running into spring but ticket sales were not strong enough after the stars’ departure. The show opened Oct. 15.

The musical concerns an Elvis Presley-like rock ‘n’ roll star named Conrad Birdie who is being drafted into the Army and the effect his departure has on the teenagers in a small Ohio town. “Birdie” features a score by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams and a book by Michael Stewart.
