John McLaughlin receives Haafiz Ali Khan Award

MUMBAI - English jazz and fusion artist John McLaughlin was awarded the Haafiz Ali Khan Award 2009 for his contribution to the world of music here Tuesday.

McLaughlin was presented with the award, named after the late musician and father of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan instituted this award in 1985 in memory of his father.

Receiving the award from Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, McLaughlin said: “To be honoured by you in this way is something more than any musician could expect. I am speechless.”

Britain based McLaughlin is known for his versatility and can perform in various styles like jazz, Indian classical music, fusion, and western classical music.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Shiv Kumar Sharma, Ustad Zakir Hussain and Birju Maharaj among others have received this award in previous years.
