ALEC BALDWIN is rallying supporters in his native Long Island, New York to save the region’s only public radio station when it goes up for auction this week (begs21Sep09).

The 30 Rock star is backing a community effort in star-studded Southampton to purchase National Public Radio (NPR) affiliate WLIU-FM from Long Island University.

University officials, who sold the Southampton College campus in 2006, say there is no longer funding to subsidise the station - after 46 years of broadcasting.

Radio bosses announced in August (09) the station had sustained annual losses of about $1 million (£666,670) before putting it up for auction.

Baldwin is working with organisers on a competitive bid for the station, which is due to be sold off on Wednesday (23Sep09).
