NEW YORK - The team taking care of Lindsay Lohan in rehab has noted if her parent Dina and Michael Lohan agree to sign up for counselling, it could help their daughter recover faster.

According to RadarOnline.com, the experts said the battling couple needs to work on their animosity toward each other with family counselling.

“It’s best when the couple is on the same page. If they’re on separate pages and having arguments, this makes things worse. Lindsay has been in a dysfunctional family for her whole life, and she is caught in the middle,” the New York Daily News quoted addiction recovery specialist, Marty Brenner, of Beverly Hills, as saying.

Paul Hokemeyer, a family therapist at Caron Treatment Centers, said, “If the parents don’t seek counseling, when Lindsay emerges from rehab and is tossed right back into the same family situation, she’ll be tempted to go back to her old substance-abusing habit.”

“Addiction is a family disease and in order to treat the patient, you need to treat the entire family system. Lindsay’s chances for remaining clean would increase substantially if they were to go for treatment,” Hokemeyer added.

Did the parents’ behavior cause Lindsay’s addictive behavior? “Kids can react to stress and problems in a family by acting out and some kids think that they can solve the problem by becoming the problem,” he explained.

It’s not clear at this point if the couple will even go for counselling. Lindsay’s dad at least admits there’s a problem and that he’s played a role in it.

Meanwhile, whether or not counselling helps Lindsay, it could possibly benefit her two younger siblingd.

“Their behaviour also affects Ali and Michael Jr. If Michael and Dina go to therapy and work to repair their relationship, it can only benefit the whole family,” said Brenner. (ANI)
