LONDON - Michael Douglas has revealed he was “bowled over” when he met wife Catherine Zeta Jones for the first time.

“She was a tremendous surprise. I was getting along quite well as a single guy and then I got struck down. I was bowled over by Catherine,” fametastic.co.uk quoted the 65-year-old, who married the Welsh beauty in 2000, as saying.

He also threw light on the secret behind the success of their marriage.

“It doesn’t hurt to be nice to each other. We sometimes make more of an effort with strangers than we do with the people closest to us. It’s just a mutual respect and a good sense of humour,” he said.

The “Basic Instinct” star also claims he and his wife, who is 25 years younger than him, share most duties to look after their children Dylan, 9 and Carys, 7, but he currently has to do the majority of domestic duties because of her busy work schedule on Broadway.

“We’ve just moved back to New York so the kids will enter new schools. We’re feeling our way as Catherine’s doing eight performances a week for the first time in 20 years,” he said.

“I’m having a little sleep deprivation trying to stay up to see her when she comes home and then get up the kids to school in the morning, but I’m enjoying it,” he added.
