NEW DELHI - How many times have you wished for a pocket in your sari to keep matching lipstick? This intersecting idea was displayed by Masaba Gupta, daughter of TV actress Neena Gupta and former West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards, on the runway Thursday.

“Most of the times I have seen women in saris wishing to have a pocket to keep that lipstick for touch up. So I thought, it was an interesting idea and I just worked on it,” Masaba Gupta told IANS after the show.

“There are times when you see women in saris holding their pleats from one hand and purse from other. So I guess for today’s women, having a pocket in their sari not only looks chic but makes a statement as well,” she added.

This 21-year-old designer launched her label “Masaba” in 2009 and showcased at the Lakme Fashion Week in two editions. The designer made her debut at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) Thursday and feels that she has matured as a designer over this one year.

“I feel that I have grown as a designer and matured in my design sense. It’s just the beginning and it’s a learning process,” said Masaba.

According to Masaba, she had never thought of being a TV actor or a cricketer because she knew that fashion was her true calling.

“This (fashion) is what I want to do and I know this is what I enjoy a lot. So, I never thought about following in the footsteps of my parents,” Masaba clarified.

Neena Gupta was also seen cheering for her daughter in the audience and said she feels proud of her daughter.

“I feel very proud. I have never discouraged her to chase her dreams. She had it in her and I support her in whatever she does,” Neena Gupta told IANS.

Masaba’s collection was inspired by Indian ethnic culture and Neena says that her daughter takes independent decisions when it comes to her theme or collection.

The line has a melange of colours and fabrics like silk, pure cotton, velvets in hues of pinks, green, bright yellow, red and a lot of white and striped saris dominated the range.
