EMMA THOMPSON and MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL’s new children’s adventure NANNY MCPHEE AND THE BIG BANG has toppled ALICE IN WONDERLAND from the top of the U.K. box office in its first week of release.
The sequel to the 2005 Nanny McPhee film is based on stories from Christianna Brand’s Nurse Matilda books.
The film grossed $3.87 million (£2.58 million) in its opening weekend (26-28Mar10), ending director Tim Burton’s three-week run at the top of the U.K. box office chart with the fantasy film.
Alice In Wonderland slips to second place with $3.74 million (£2.49 million) and Sandra Bullock’s Oscar-winning film The Blind Side enters at three with $1.95 million (£1.3 million).
Crime thriller Shutter Island and romantic comedy The Bounty Hunter round out the new top five.
