JAMES CAMERON’s blockbuster AVATAR has inched closer to sinking the $600.7 million (?375.4 million) U.S. box office record set by his 1997 drama TITANIC - after the sci-fi movie dominated competition for its seventh straight weekend (29-31Jan10).
The 3-D adventure movie added another $30 million (?18.8 million) to its domestic total, now at $594.5 million (?371.6 million) - and it’s on track to soar past Titanic’s U.S. record.
Mel Gibson followed as the second box office favourite - his new revenge-thriller Edge of Darkness earned $17.1 million (?10.7 million) in its debut weekend.
Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel’s new comedy When in Rome debuted at three, with $12.1 million (?7.6 million), followed by Dame Julie Andrews and Dwayne Johnson’s comedy, Tooth Fairy, which took $10 million (?6.3 million) in its second week.
Rounding out the top five is Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman’s The Book of Eli, which raked in nearly $8.4 million (?5.3million) in its third week.
