GEORGE CLOONEY’s Hope For Haiti Now telethon has raised more than $57 million (?35.6 million) for the earthquake relief effort.
Hollywood’s elite, including Jack Nicholson, Ben Affleck and Mel Gibson, manned telephones during Friday night’s (22Jan10) event, while Alicia Keys, Madonna, Beyonce, Bono and Christina Aguilera were amongst the stars who performed live from one of three venues - Los Angeles, New York and London.
The huge sum raised is a record for telethons according to the Entertainment Industry Foundation - and it will be boosted further through the sale of songs performed on the show through iTunes.
Speaking to MTV after the event, Clooney, who donated $1 million (?625,000) of his own money, said, “I hope we made some money out of this. The only way to make this a success is to make a considerable amount of money.”
