Kurbaan: A taut thriller
Rating: 3.5 out of 5*
Starring: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi and Om Puri
Director: Rensil DSilva
Love blossoms between a Delhi college professor, Avantika (Kareena) and her newly joined colleague, Ehsaan Khan (Saif). But as she receives a call to join back her University in New York, Ehsaan proposes marriage. While her father initially disapproves of the match because of Ehsaan being a Muslim, he finally gives his nod impressed by Ehsaans approach. The couple goes to New York and finds a house in an Indian neighbourhood. But soon Avantika realizes her own husband is a major part of the terrorist sleeper cell operating there and is the reason for aeroplane blast that kills 140 people. She also comes to know that the terror outfits next plane is something as big as 9/11. How she unearths the plot with a journalist Riyaaz s (Vivek) aid and what it all leads forms the rest of the plot.
Writer Rensil DSilva (Rang De Basanti) making his directorial debut with Kurbaan delivers a taut thriller that keeps you engrossed throughout. Despite its long running time of over 2 hours and 40 minutes his gripping narrative has enough twists n turns and chilling moments. Cutting away from commercial cinema traps and unwanted cinematic liberties, he has made Kurbaan one of the best thrillers to be experienced on the big screen in recent times. Without taking any sides, the film manages to strike an impact leaving you shaken with the full of bloodshed climax. Super aid comes in form of Niranjan Iyengar and Anurag Kashyaps dialogues. They are precise and to the point without sounding preachy. The classroom sequence when American students question discuss terrorism and Islam and Vivek Oberois replies to them is one of the films most important and noteworthy sequence. Though the place drops a bit post interval, the 35 40 minute long climax keeps you on the edge of your seat. The much talked about love making sequence is very aesthetically shot. Salim Suleimans music is good and fits in the movie well with no lip sync songs.
Saif Ali Khan has always been very good whenever he has gone wicked and here as well he comes up triumphs in a grey role. The way he changes his body language and facial expressions from a charming romantic to a cold blooded terrorist is just superb. Kareena Kapoor proves yet again why she is considered a top rated actress today. However, in many emotional sequences she appears very similar in her act to her elder sister, Karisma. After a really very long time Vivek Oberoi leaves you extremely impressed. His mature act is bound to win him many accolades and awards for sure. Om Puri as the terrorist sleeper cell head is very good. Kirron Kher after a long time gets a non-Punjabi mom role and she is has delivered one of her career best performance in this one. Dia Mirza and Nauheed Cyrusi leave you impressed despite their short roles.
Hemant Chaturvedis camerawork matches international standards and so does Nakul Kamtes Sound work.
Finally, a big applause for Karan Johar for making under his Dharma Productions, a film which is very unlike any previous film made under his prestigious banner and one which is not only extremely well made but also very topical.

Shame on the makers of the film and those starring in it, I will boycott Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s film from now on, such racist anti-muslim propaganda in Kurban makes it disgusting, especially in times where such propaganda is used to kill thousands. |

I am a sikh person and i have a lot of muslim friends and i honestly did not like this movie. Yes it does have an interesting plot, but i feel the movie really portrays muslims in a negative light. It does not do much to mitigate the hatred that hindus have towards muslims, but intensifies the stereotypes that people use to identify muslims. The movie’s trying to illustrate that nobody who’s a muslim should be spared from scrutiny of being a terrorist b/c even a professor, an engineer, a guard is involved in the terrorist plan, all sharing one common thing- a muslim name. It requires the audience to scrutinize everything from an anti muslim view point and leaves no one b/c apparently if you are muslim then you must be a fundamentalist regardless of your profession. The movie makes me ashamed of bollywood, the actors did play their part well, but i have a strong feeling its jsut a method that will ultimately have a negative backlash against the muslim population creating us. vs them dichotomy and that is the last thing that we need. As seen by discussion topics above, me its obvious that there is enough animosity among the different populations. |

I agree. After watching movies like “New York” and “Fanaa” I was highly impressed with the stories and the non-bias in the films, both sides were portrayed fairly and their story lines were realistic. However, Kurbaan was first off highly unrealistic and very anti-Muslim. Especially since there was no basis for a lot of the stuff, such as the daughter being killed and stored in her garage-that doesn’t happen, neither has there been a bomb brought onto a plane. It was a movie full of hatred and I’m surprised it is getting so much appraise from the audience. I’m disappointed in Karan Johar and in the Indian cinema. He should stick to his triangle love stories because if he want to make movies like this you can’t pull them out of your ass. |

It is annoying to see Indian cinema trying to get into a subject that they have a very little understanding of. They are trying to kiss ass to Americans by trying to tell them that Pakistanis are terrorists in their subliminal messages delivered through movies. They need to get the facts straight and leave this terror and terror-related subjects focused on their Hindutva related terrorists acts and Indian Army’s terror in Kashmir. All they have to do is visit a Kashmiri home and they will find a real true story of Muslims suffering at the hands of Indian Army or Policies of Hindu ruling parties. It is time that they stop producing 3rd rated propaganda movies and produce the movies on subjects that are really plagueing India such as abject poverty among Muslim due to Hindu discrimination against them, treatment of Kashmiris in their homeland by an occupying Army i.e., Indian Army. There are plenty of stories that are close to Indian ground reality. Anyway, I watched an Indian movie after 2 year and what a disapointment it was. I guess I will put another self-imposed moratorium on watching Indian movies. What a waste of my time? Idiot writer, producers etc. |

I found the movie Kurbaan to be quite Anti-Muslim. I am usually very open-minded about movies I watch, but in this case felt the producer, Karan Johar, should have been more responsible as I feel he has encouraged muslim hatred. In the cinema I went to watch Kurbaan in, members of the audience were heckling and encouraged by the anti-muslim comments made by the university students regarding 9/11. There were a couple of sentences portraying the muslim view, but the rest of it was quite anti-muslim. 1 thing that annoys me is why did Kareena Kapoor have to be Hindu? Did they not think a Muslim wife would feel horrified at being used by a man to get citizenship and be against terrorism? I am a muslim woman and am completely anti-terrorism from ANY religion. Very disappointed with Karan Johar! |
