NY’s Cablevision taps media executive

BETHPAGE, N.Y. — Cablevision Systems Corp. has hired a publishing executive to oversee operations at both News 12 Networks and Newsday.

The company says Tad Smith, formerly of Reed Business Information, will oversee a newly created unit called Local Media. Cablevision says its goal is to operate both news organizations more effectively.

News 12 Networks, headed by Pat Dolan, and Newsday CEO Tim Knight will both report to Smith. His boss will be Cablevision’s chief operating officer, Tom Rutledge.

Smith formerly oversaw production of Variety, Daily Variety and Publishers Weekly.

Newsday was established in 1940 as one of the nation’s first daily suburban newspapers. News 12, started in 1986, now has seven local news channels serving the New York region.
