Media veteran is new publisher of Union-Tribune

SAN DIEGO — A 32-year media veteran was named Tuesday as the new president and publisher of The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Ed Moss will be responsible for day-to-day management of the struggling newspaper and for efforts to stabilize financial performance and increase revenue, the newspaper said in a statement.

The Union-Tribune said last week it was cutting 192 jobs in another round of layoffs affecting all departments. The layoffs amount to about 18 percent of its staff, which will be reduced to about 850 workers after the cuts become effective July 6.

The layoffs came three days after Platinum Equity, a Beverly Hills private equity firm, completed its acquisition of the newspaper from Copley Press Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

Moss, whose appointment takes effect May 18, is known for developing strategies aimed at local readers and advertisers.

“It is most important that our products reflect the great communities that we serve,” he said.

Moss most recently worked as president and chief executive of the Los Angeles Newspaper Group. The subsidiary of MediaNews Group Inc. publishes nine daily newspapers in Southern California.

He was previously president and publisher of the Akron Beacon Journal in Ohio.
