NEW DELHI - Watching Ashutosh Gowariker’s “Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey”, based on the Chittagong Uprising of 1930, was a revelation for senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani.

A special screening was organised for him in the capital Thursday and he was all praise for the film, based on veteran journalist Manini Chatterjee’s book “Do And Die”.

“It is a wonderful film. The Chittagong Uprising was a revelation to me. The book is detailed and the film does complete justice to the book right till the end. The film goes beyond any box office collections. Congratulations for that, Advani told Gowariker over phone, according to a source.

“Khelein…” traces the struggle of Surjya Sen, who led a raid April 18, 1930 on the Chittagong armoury by armed revolutionaries, including teenaged boys.

Gowariker, who has made films like “Lagaan” and “Swades” in the past, wasn’t present at the screening, but he has acknowledged Advani’s words of appreciation.

I was completely overwhelmed with his response to the film and it was unfortunate that I could not make it to this special screening as it was my parents’ wedding anniversary, he said.

However, Manini Chatterjee marked her presence at the screening and Advani congratulated her for bringing out the detailed account of the lesser-known part of the country’s freedom movement through her book.
