JOSH BROLIN’s new movie drug drama CARTEL has been scrapped a month before filming was scheduled to begin in Mexico.

Brolin signed on to play a man out to protect his son from Mexican drug lords in the Universal Pictures project.

Pre-production on the drama ceased on Wednesday (07Apr10), according to a statement from studio bosses.

A spokesman for Universal says, “The studio and its producing partners did not feel it was creatively ready to move forward under the timetable and budget we had established. We thank all of the filmmakers, cast and crew for their work during pre-production.”

Sean Penn was originally attached to star in the film, inspired by 1993 Italian film La Scorta, according to Daily Variety.
