Actress-turned-activist ASHLEY JUDD has thrown her support behind proposed legislation to help combat violence against women.

The Double Jeopardy star is urging politicians in the U.S. to pass the International Violence Against Women Act, which would help tackle gender-based abuse abroad as well as in America.

Judd, who has long campaigned on the issue and is a global ambassador for Population Services International (PSI), told reporters on Tuesday (23Mar10), “I’ve spent an awful lot of time in brothels, more than I care to recall. What I have learned is that gender-based violence is not deviant and perverted and the acts of a few monstrous individuals. What I would posit is that that kind of violence against women is really the norm, and once we accept it’s the norm, then we can broaden the scope of the solutions that we’re willing to throw at the problem.”
