NEW DELHI - Bollywood actress Preity Zinta on Wednesday became the brand ambassador of a global charity to champion the cause of widows across the world.
Preity joined hands with the Loomba Trust as its brand ambassador to work for the upliftment and betterment of widows.
The actress, who herself was raised by a single mother after the death of her father, empathized fully with the problems faced by a widow.
“Urban India is still okay, because women today stand shoulder to shoulder with men. They are going out, they are working, and they are being empowered,” Preity said.
“Rural India is a huge problem. The fact that they lack basic education, where if you are not educated, if you don’t have awareness around you as to what’s happening, you fall into the age-old trap of, you know, this falls under religion and this is this,” she added.
Priety also said: “If we can help these women, leaving aside whatever problems come with our culture or whatever else; we can go out there and make a difference. I think that would be our purpose.”
Millions of widows across the globe are victims of social discrimination, financial instability, human trafficking, physical and mental abuse.
The trust aims at helping the disadvantaged and marginalized widows to empower themselves through its various projects worldwide.
The trust is also campaigning for United Nations’ recognition of June 23 as the International Widows Day, which it feels would help in highlighting the plight of widows and their children all over the world. (ANI)
