Film bosses in the Bahamas are set to honour celebrity resident JOHNNY DEPP by presenting him with a coveted prize at the island nation’s upcoming film festival.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star has been selected to receive the prestigious Career Achievement Award at the 2009 Bahamas International Film Festival (BIFF) in Nassau.

The festival’s patron Sir Sean Connery will be on hand to hand over the prize, which will be an extra special accolade for Depp, who owns his own paradise retreat in the Bahamas.

BIFF founder Leslie Vanderpool says, “There is no actor better suited to receive BIFF’s highest honour, the Career Achievement Award. Johnny Depp is one of the finest actors of our generation and is, simply put, an icon. We’re all tremendously excited to bestow him with this honour and celebrate his incomparable career.

“What makes this tribute to Johnny even more special is that he has a home in the Bahamas and possesses a true love and appreciation for the region and culture. This will be an amazing and magical event for everyone involved.”

The Career Achievement Award, whose previous recipients include Nicolas Cage, Daryl Hannah and Laurence Fishburne, was set up to recognise stars whose body of work has had a profound impact on cinema.

The festival is set to take place from 10 to 17 December (09).
