Tinsel town has been hit by the news of another celebrity death again, as reports came in about the death of the veteran Hollywood actor Karl Malden. It is reported that the 97 year old Oscar and Emmy winning actor died of natural causes in Los Angeles. His daughter Mila Doermer has confirmed the news. He is survived by his wife Mona, who had been married to him for a long stretch of 70 years, almost a record in show business; going by the fact that showbiz marriages are generally very frail.
Karl Malden had started his movie career in the early 1940s and is best known for his roles in such movies as “A Streetcar Named Desire” where he played the character of a shy suitor, “On the Waterfront” and “One Eyed Jack”, which are classic Marlon Brando ventures. The classics still remain in talk because of the brilliant performances by Brando and Malden. Malden represented the plain faced common man of that time and in front of Brando’s savage character, he was the perfect foil, playing the gentle natured Mitch.
Malden had been involved in the show business for more than seven decades and in his long career, had shied away from any sort of scandals or controversies. He was also the former president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
His real name was Mladen Sekulovich, which he changed to Karl Malden at the young age of 22 because the theater company that he was working for then had wanted him to adopt a simpler name. He had traveled to New York City in pursuit of his acting career and in the year 1937, appeared in a Broadway play. He hadn’t been part of any movie for quite sometime and his most successful films are from decades ago, but he still remains as close to our hearts because people will always love watching his classics and the characters he had played.
