Susan Boyle in hospital after ‘emotional breakdown’ (Lead)

LONDON - Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle, who rose to fame on reality show “Britain’s Got Talent” but lost to dance group Diversity in the final, was

admitted to a private clinic here for treatment for exhaustion.

Police were summoned to Boyle’s hotel here when the 48-year-old exhibited symptoms of “emotional breakdown” following the show’s Saturday finale, reported people.com.

“We were called about 6 p.m. on Sunday to a central London hotel to doctors assessing a woman under the Mental Health Act,” said a police spokesperson.

The producers of the show are offering their ongoing support to the singer who was living a quiet life in Blackburn, West Lothian before appearing on the show.

“Following Saturday night’s show, Susan is exhausted and emotionally drained. We offer her our ongoing support and wish her a speedy recovery,” said a statement released by the producers of “Britain’s Got Talent”.

Boyle has been watched by millions of Internet viewers since she stunned judges and the audience on the ITV1 talent show April 11.

Her rendition of “I Dreamed A Dream” from the musical “Les Miserables” has turned her into a global phenomenon with celebrity fans including the actress Demi Moore.

The famously single Boyle became a household name after that and was tipped to win the reality show.

According to reports, after her shock defeat Boyle ran down a corridor shouting “I hate this show”.

But judge Piers Morgan, who apparently took her on a date, said that her shock defeat was the best thing that could have happened to her. Morgan said a victory would have “just carried on the mayhem”.

“I do think it may turn out to be the best thing that happens to her, coming second. I think she has found a lot of it quite hard to deal with and I think the pressure of actually winning and living up to all that expectation would have just carried on the mayhem for her,” Daily Mail quoted Morgan as saying.

“I’m only sorry that the extraordinary tidal wave of publicity she attracted meant so many people got either bored or irritated by Boyle mania and decided not to vote for her,” he added.

It is estimated that Boyle, from Blackburn, West Lothian, could still earn more than five million pounds from television, advertising and record deals if she pursues a singing career.

A peak of 19.2 million people watched Saturday night’s final, during the second part of the coverage. It meant 72 percent of people watching television had tuned in.

After her sensational appearance on the show, Boyle made it to America’s longest running animated series “The Simpsons”. Her name was mentioned in an episode of the sitcom where character Homer Simpson auditions for the talent show’s judge Simon Cowell in “Springfield’s Got Talent” - a parody of the US version of the show.

Echoing Susan’s words at her audition, Homer tells the judging panel: “My name is Homer Simpson, I’m 39 years old and, well, I’ve never been kissed… My dream is to be a great singer like Susan Boyle.”

Boyle was also mentioned in adult cartoon series “South Park”.

Prior to her appearance on “Britain’s Got Talent”, she used to sing in church and karaoke in pubs in her village. She had also tried out several times for Michael Barrymore’s TV show “My Kind of People”.
