June 1, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Actor Johny Depp, known for playing the unconventional roles, has got two reasons to celebrate. His latest film, Alice in Wonderland has become the sixth film ever to cross the $1 billion gross mark. This has made him the only actor, whose two films have reached this milestone, the other being his 2006 release, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

The other reason of his celebration is because of Depp’s character ‘Edward Scissorhands’ from the 1990 film of the same name. The character has been ranked 7 in the top 100 of the greatest characters of the last 20 years as picked by the Entertainment Weekly (EW). The character that catapulted Depp from a teen idol to a movie star is refereed by EW as a misunderstood teenage Frankenstein.

Depp got a lead role in the television series named ‘21 Jump Street’, before playing the role of Edwards Scissorhand with the director Tim Burton. His association with Burton started with this film and they later worked in the films Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and most recently the Alice in Wonderland.

His most popular role is perhaps that of the Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. He has also been praised for his portrayals of the real life figures such as legendary bank robber John Dillinger in Michael Mann’s 2009 film Public Enemies.

Depp has been thrice nominated for the Academy Award for the ‘Best Actor’. He was awarded the ‘Best Actor Award’ from the Golden Globes for his role in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
