Grunge rock icons SOUNDGARDEN surprised fans in their native Seattle, Washington on Friday night (16Apr10) by performing their first show in 13 years under the anagram NUDE DRAGONS.

Chris Cornell and his bandmates secretly reunited last year (09) and chose to mark their comeback by returning to where it all started for them.

News of the group’s planned set at the Showbox at the Market hit the internet on Thursday (15Apr10), prompting fans’ furious scramble for tickets via social networking site Twitter.com.

Many were left confused when the reformed band was not named as one of Friday night’s performing acts at the Market, and it took eagle-eyed devotees to spot that Nude Dragons was an anagram of Soundgarden.

Lucky ticketholders were treated to a 90-minute set packed with renditions of classics including Rusty Cage, Nothing To Say and Fell On Black Days, as well as a cover of The Doors’ Waiting For The Sun, reports Billboard.com.

But it wasn’t just local fans who turned out to witness the return of Soundgarden - stars such as Stone Gossard, who currently plays with Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron in Pearl Jam, the Fastbacks’ Kurt Bloch and Mark Arm from Mudhoney were also in attendance, according to the Seattle Post-Intellegencer.

Soundgarden will return to the festival scene this summer (10) when they headline the 2010 Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, Illinois - the last outdoor event they played together before splitting in 1997.
