LOS ANGELES, (GaeaTimes.com)- The hegemony of male supremacy in the Oscar’s best director category shifted this year as the best director Academy Awards winner is not a man but a woman. Kathryn Bigelow was conferred the best director award for the film “The Hurt Locker” at this year’s Oscar night.

Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” won six awards at the 82nd Academy Awards. The ex-wife of “Avatar” director James Cameron left behind the other four nominations for the best director category, which included her ex-spouse James Cameron. Since the nomination of the two for the category at the Oscar, people were waiting anxiously to know the ultimate winner. By wining the award on Sunday, Kathryn Bigelow not only held her first Oscar award but also made herself a part of history by being the first woman to receive the best director award.

The director of the Iraq war based film “The Hurt Locker”, Kathryn Bigelow had received many accolades for her film and this comes as a natural follow up. On Sunday, during her award acceptance speech, Kathryn Bigelow described the moment as the “moment of a lifetime”. She dedicated her award to the people who stay in Afghanistan and Iraq; who risk their life everyday as they go out of their house. She said that her award is for all those men and women all over the world who have to risk their lives everyday. Kathryn Bigelow had more reasons to be happy apart from receiving the best director award, as her film “The Hurt Locker” has received six other awards. It has also received the Best Picture Award, the Best Film Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Writing (Original Screenplay).
