Maria Goretti’s back on TV with something sweet

NEW DELHI - Former MTV veejay Maria Goretti is excited about returning to the small screen as an anchor after a gap of nearly six years. And, no, it isn’t a music show this time but one on delicious desserts.

“It feels really great to be back. It’s just as if I’m coming back home. I am excited, but it feels normal as well. I feel this is how it (life) is supposed to be and I am enjoying it,” Maria told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

She will be seen on NDTV Good Times’ “Do It Sweet”, a new show about mouth-watering desserts, along with chef Vicky Ratnani. The culinary programme airs every Sunday at 1.30 p.m.

Maria kept away from showbiz for six years as she wanted to devote time to her family - her actor husband Arshad Warsi and her two kids - five-year-old son Zeke Zidaan and two-year-old daughter Zene Zoe.

“All these years I was busy taking care of my family. I have two kids…So I had no time to come out and work for hours. But now that the kids are a little grown up, I do have time and wanted to do something. So this is it,” she said.

Asked why she chose a culinary show over a music show for her comeback, Maria said: “I have travelled a lot in six years and have tried various cuisines everywhere. I really got interested in the entire cooking process for the past three years. I started makings cakes, puddings, asparagus, Lebanese food, brownies, etc.

“I started cooking a lot of things for my kids. So I was so happy when the show was offered to me because it had to do with something I love - desserts. I love chocolaty and gooey desserts! I was truly happy about it.”

Considering most veejays today opt for Bollywood after gaining popularity on music channels, Maria made just a cameo with her son in “Salaam Namaste”, which also featured Arshad. The 37-year-old says becoming an actor was never on her agenda.

“I did not become a veejay to become an actor. When I was a veejay, I had put in all my energy into that and till date I’m looked upon as a veejay. I like that. I believe that one should give his or her 100 percent to everything that they do.

“I’m the kind of person who would have gone into acting straight, but I never wanted to. Being a veejay was something that came to me very easily and I did a pretty good job of it…I feel. So I never felt the need to go and act in films,” Maria said.
