Man butts heads with town over bare-bottom statue

SILT, Colo. — At least one critic in the western Colorado town of Silt said a new sculpture of a bare-bottom rock climber is exposing the public to a little too much art. The statue shows a climber of undetermined gender scaling a cliff. It stands at a downtown intersection.

Forrest Jacobs said he complained to town officials that the sculpture is inappropriate but he said he got little response.

Mayor Dave Moore said he’s sympathetic to Jacobs’ argument but adds that the statue is an artist’s rendition.

The sculptor, Blaine Peters, said critics are seeing only what they want to see. He calls the climber “a human in the rawest form climbing a rock.”

On Monday, someone covered the climber’s derriere with a cloth. Town workers took it down.
