US tally of confirmed swine flu at 226 as labs work through backlog; but disease ‘on upswing’

NEW YORK — The government’s tally of confirmed swine flu cases in the United States jumped Sunday to 226, but officials said that’s largely from catching up on a backlog of lab tests rather than a sudden spurt in new infections.

CDC optimistic new flu not as dangerous as first feared, but ‘we’re not out of the woods yet’

WASHINGTON — U.S. health officials are cautiously optimistic that the new swine flu isn’t as dangerous as first feared, but urged people on Sunday to keep taking commonsense precautions — and they can’t predict if it will roar back in the fall.
