Jack Ely, the singer whose 1963 version of “Louie Louie” still makes the rounds on oldies radio, lives with his wife in a mobile home on a horse ranch in Oregon. Ely says they share $30,000 a year from her teacher’s pension and his Social Security checks. They are paying down a mortgage.
India’s most-acclaimed contemporary filmmaker, Adoor Gopalakrishnan has been selected as a jury member of the international Fribourg International Film Festival (FIFF) to be held from March 14 to 21 at Switzerland. The five-member international jury also includes Nicolas Philibert (France) and Oliver Paulus (Switzerland), film restorator Norma Rivera Valdivia (Peru), and actor/producer Martina Gusman (Argentina). 80 movies from around 30 countries will be screened during the 23rd FIFF, which will open with the screening of Argentine drama Leonera (2008), directed by Pablo Trapero. Notably, jury member Martina Gusman plays the main role in Leonera. FIFF’s grand prize, comprising an amount of $24,421, will be awarded to the best film on March 21.
