Jayasuriya turns cop again

Knonw for playing lighter roles, actor Jayasuriya seems to be working on his image makeover. After portraying a tough police officer in V K Prakash’s Positive, the actor is all set to take gaian the cop’s character in his upcoming flick Robinhood which features Prithviraj and Naren in the lead roles abd the flick is going to be directed by veteran Joshy. Jayasuriya will be investigating the number of robberies happening in the ATM’s. Jaysuriya is quite happy to be a part of a movie, directed by veteran Joshy, and is more interested as the young team of their previous hit ‘Clasmmates’ is reuniting with this movie.

Sreenivasan to be boycotted by the producers

On the complaint launched by producer Vindhyan, The Kerala Film Producers’ Association had decided to ask its members not to sign actor-script-writer Sreenivasan for any of their future projects. Vindhyan has alleged Sreevinivasan of not returning the advance amount of 7 lacs which he had been paid 11 years ago for scripting a film. But now since the project is been abandoned Vindhyan is demanding his money back from Sreevivasan. On the other hand, AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes) and FEFKA (Film Employees’ Federation of Kerala), which had formed a coalition with the producers’ association against the Macta Federation, has objected to its decision to boycott Sreenivasan. In a combined statement, office bearers of both these associations have called for initiating efforts to settle the issue by discussions.   – Sampurn Media

Kamal encourages children films

Sharing the stage with his guru, Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, at the music launch function of Pasanga, Kamal Hassan encouraged the filmmakers to make more films based on children issues like Pasanga. He also asked the producers and media to be more forthcoming in producing and promoting children’s films that depict issues facing them. When asked about his views on Slumdog Millionaire (SM), Kamal said that it is a victory only for A.R. Rahman as Slumdog Millionaire is not an Indian film. He further added that Director Danny Boyle shot the film in the slums of Mumbai; if people find such a portrayal offensive, then they must come forward and take efforts to change our country for the better, rather than just being armchair critics.  - SAMPURN

Prem Kumars Sundarimukku

Making his comeback with Bipin Prabhakars Samasathakeralam, noted Malayalam actor Prem Kumar has also earned a pivotal role in a flick titled Sundarimukku which is to be directed by K.M. Raj. The film is going to be produced by Krisfin under the banner of Rani Cine Movies and stars Janardhanan, Indrans, Kochupreman, Shajoma, Anil Sanal Kumar, Pradeep, Seena Pillai, Maya Moushmi, Sree Kutty, Prajusha and others in the cast. Deepante Kadha hits the floor

After the pooja held at Malabar Hotel at Kozhikode on 11th of March, the shooting of Sasi Narayan’s directorial venture Deepante Kadha has now commenced ob 25th of March. The film is been shot at the beautiful locations of Areekod, Shoranur, Ottapalam and Malappuram. Sasi Narayan has himself jotted down the story and dialogues. M.J. Souryam to be dubbed in Malayalam

Cinematographer-turned-director J. Siva Kumar’s first Telugu venture Souryam, is reportedly being dubbed in Malayalam with the same title. The film stars Gopichand, Anushka Shetty and Poonam Kaur in the lead roles. The movie is produced by Anand Prasad under the banner Bhavya Creations. The music is been composed by Mani Sharma while Vetri has captured the flick in his camera. Editing has been handled by Marthand K. Venkatesh. Story and screenplay are done by the director himself. Resul Pookutty to be honoured with Pattathuvila Karunakaram Memorial Trust Award

Oscar winning sound engineer, Resul Pookutty will be honoured by Pattathuvila Karunakaram Memorial Trust Award during ‘Shanti Sangeetha Sandhya’ led by legendary Indian singer K.J. Yesudas on April 1 at the Swaralaya Open Air Auditorium, Kollam. Education Minister M.A. Baby will present this prestigious award to Resul which along with a citation and a trophy also has a cash prize of Rs. 25,000. Singer Yesudas will also give away this year’s Swaralaya K.P.A.C. Sulochana Award to playback singer P. Susheela during the function. Nila National Festival was inaugurated by Adoor

India’s most-acclaimed filmmaker, Adoor Gopalkrishnan, inaugurated Nila National Festival of Dance and Music, organized by Kerala Kalamandalam, at Cheruthuruthy, Thrissur on Friday. He has also been selected as a jury member of the international Fribourg Film Festival to be held from March 14 at Switzerland. Eminent artistes and students of Indian performing arts will participate in the three-day festival, which will have cultural interactions between leading artistes and art students. Founded in 1930 by renowned poet Vallathol Narayana Menon and Manakkulam Mukunda Raja on the banks of the river Nila, Kerala Kalamandalam is a major residential centre for learning Indian performing arts like Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Kudiyattam, Thullal, Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, and Nangiar Koothu, besides the traditional orchestra called Panchavadyam.   - SAMPURN

Scriptwriter-turned-director B. Unnikrishnan’s much awaited film I.G. has altast hit the theatres yesterday. Suresh Gopia stars in this flick which was given a clean ‘U’ certificate by the Regional Censor Board in Thiruvananthapuram and the film has been screened in 65 theatres across Kerala. The flick has been produced by by Mahi under the banner of Super films. I.G. has Jagathy Sreekumar, Vijayaraghavan, Devan, Govind Padmasuriya, Rajan P. Narain’s precautionary measures

Narain is taking a lot of precautions before signing a flick after having learnt a lesson from his 2008 release Minnaminnikoottam, which doomed at the box office. The actor went through around 300 scripts before zeroing in on Pookada Ravi which is being directed by Shivakumar. It is said to be an action-based family flick being produced by Sun Pictures, is expected to hit theatres by March 2009. The movie is basically about the brother-sister relationship shared between the hero and his seven-year-old sibling. The entire talkie portion has been completed in and around Madurai.

Entries invited for international film festival in Kerala

Entries have been invited for the second international documentary and short film festival to be held in Thiruvananthapuram from June 19 to June 25. A press note, issued by the Kerala State Chalachithra Academy, said the last date for submitting applications is May 1.

Remake of Neela Thamara

Renowned Mollywood director Lal Jose is about to create history in the Malayalam Film Industry by remaking a yesteryears Malayalam flick Neela Thamara as it would be the first time that any yesteryear Malayalam cinema is being remade. Yusaf Ali Kechery had directed Neela Thamara in 1979 and it’s been said that Lal Jose is in search of fresh faces to star in its remake. M.T. Vasudevan is rewriting the old script to make it interesting keeping in mind today’s audiences. This film is going to be produced by G. Suresh Kumar under the banner of Revathy Kalamandhir. April release for Vellathooval

Veteran Malayalam’s director I.V. Sasi’s Vellathooval has completed shooting and is all set to hit the theatres in the last week on April. Mammootty to investigate murder for Palery Maanikyam in Paris

Mammootty’s upcoming flick Palery Maanikyam is based on the murder-investigation story that took place in the early seventies but now the makers of the flick is planning to give a new face lift to the film’s story track. The news is doing the rounds that director Renjith and his crew is planning to shoot the first schedule of the flick in the beautiful city of Paris. Mammootty is playing the character of an investigator who is landing in Paris from the nation’s capital in order to probe the murder of a man named Manikyan. It seems Malashri just loves donning the cop’s character. After appearing in the character of a police officer in films like Lady Police, Lady Commissioner and Bhavani IPS, the talented actress is now been seen in the cop’s uniform in her recently released flick Kiran Bedi. Don’t get mistaken by the name of the flick as the film is in no way related to super cop Kiran Bedi and her name is been used just for inspiration. The action sequences are the high point of the film and Malashri has tried her best to be flexible in the stunt sequences. Malashri is seen playing a double role. Where she plays a cop she is also playing a thief named Bhagyalakshmi. Malashri is looking good in the role of a police officer, but she could have done better in the role of Bhagyalakshmi.

Kalabhavans Pakida Pakida Panthrandu

Xavier Titus’s flick Pakida Pakida Panthrandu is said to be an out-and-out comedy flick. This would be first time that Kalabhavan Mani would be seen in a full-fledged comedy film. The film has been scripted by the director himself and produced by Mummy Century under the banner of Century Vision. Pakida Pakida Panthrandu will have an array of leading Malayalam comedians, including Jagathy, Salimkumar, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Harishree Ashokan, Biju Kuttan and Mala. Cinematographed Utpal V. Big movies to hit theatres in summer

This movie is a to the super hit movie Irupatham Noottandu of the 80’s in which Mohanlal played the character of an underworld don. Even In Harihar Nahar’s sequel 2 Harihar Nagar will get released during this period while Suresh Gopi’s cop movie IG will hit the theatres on 3rd of April.

Adoor to judge in Fribourg International Film Festival

India’s most-acclaimed contemporary filmmaker, Adoor Gopalakrishnan has been selected as a jury member of the international Fribourg International Film Festival (FIFF) to be held from March 14 to 21 at Switzerland. The five-member international jury also includes Nicolas Philibert (France) and Oliver Paulus (Switzerland), film restorator Norma Rivera Valdivia (Peru), and actor/producer Martina Gusman (Argentina). 80 movies from around 30 countries will be screened during the 23rd FIFF, which will open with the screening of Argentine drama Leonera (2008), directed by Pablo Trapero. Notably, jury member Martina Gusman plays the main role in Leonera. FIFF’s grand prize, comprising an amount of $24,421, will be awarded to the best film on March 21.  

Kavya weds Nischal

Leading Malayalam actress Kavya Madhavan married Nischal Chandran, a computer engineer working in National Bank of Kuwait as Technical adviser, on February 5 at Sree Mookambika Temple, Kollur between 10.20 and 10.50 a.m. Nischal arrived at the temple with his parents, followed by Kavya along with her father Madhavan and mother Syamala. Only around 100 people, comprising close relatives and friends, had been invited for the ceremony. A ‘Ganapathy Homam’ was also done to appease Lord Vigneshwara. After the ceremony, the couple also found time to flash smiles to the media waiting outside, but refused to reply to queries. On February 9, there will be a wedding reception at Le Meridian, Kochi for her filmy friends.   – Sampurn Media

Mammootty feels Malayalam films cannot win an Oscar

Malayalam superstar Mammootty expressed during his address at the mammoth reception held to honour Oscar Award winner Resul Poopkutty by Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce at Durbar Hall in Kochi that a Malayalam filmcan never win an Oscar. He said, “Malayalam cinema will never win an Oscar award. A movie running for Oscars should have a minimum of 15-day screening at New York and Los Angeles counties. Moreover, a foreigner judging the movie should understand Malayalam. If we’re delivering the dialogues in English, he should also be able to understand our English.”   - SAMPURN

Rahmans mega show in Kerala

After having won the Oscars, music maestro would be first time performing live music concert titled ‘Jai Ho’ at Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode, Kerala on May 3 to express solidarity with the HIV positive orphan kids. Apart from Rahman, over 50 well-known musicians will be participating in this show being organized by the NGO Global Kerala Initiative. A.R. Rahman said he had been wanting to perform in Kerala for the last 15 years. Though he had cancelled at least seven shows this year itself as he would be in US for at least six months, he wanted the Kerala show to be held as it was ‘irresistible’. Malayalam singers are gifted, dedicated and their foundation very strong, he said to a news agency.

Mammootty refused to vote without electoral card

Superstar Mammootty set a right example in front of the people when he refused to vote without his mandatory electoral identification card even when the polling officer gave him the permission to do so. It so happened that the actor rushed from his film Daddy Cool’s shooting to cast his vote in his No 86 booth in a school at Eelamkulam, in Ernakulam on Thursday morning. But it was only after being asked the officers that he realized that he hasn’t got his card with him. He called up at his residence and it took around twenty minutes before the card reached to him. Until then the crowd started gathering in huge numbers to witness the star and the polling officers in fear that this could affect the polling process asked him to cast his vote without the card. But Mammootty refused them saying that his experience will remind other people that before coming to vote they must ensure that they have their voters ID with them. He then told the media that that there is nothing wrong with the happenings and that every citizen must exercise their franchise before starting to criticize the system.
Mammootty proved that he is not only an off-screen hero but a hero in real life too, looking at whom people can get inspired.   - SAMPURN

Shanthnoo to act in a Malayalam film

Son of Tamil actor-director K. Bhagyaraj and Poornima, Shanthnoo is lucky enough to be launched in a Malayalam film Angel John, which also has Malayalam superstar Mohanlal starring in it. Shanthnoo will be playing the character of a B.Com. student whose only interest is to venture into business. But his father Angel John (Mohanlal) wants him to be a government employee. In a strange situation, Angel John’s son attempts to commit suicide, but somehow survives. The rest of the story develops how his father brings him back to a normal life. The flick is been produced by Narayan Das under the banner of Creative Team Productions.  

Passenger moving at a brick pace

Ranjit Shankar’s directorial debut flick Passenger’s shooting is progressing at a fast pace in Guruvayoor. The film stars veteran actor-director Sreenivasan and comedian-turned-hero Dileep in lead roles. The film is being produced by S.P. Pillai and Sankaran Kutty under the banner of Vijay Combines. The movie also features Jathathi Sreekumar, Nedumudi Venu, Sivaji Guruvayoor, Sona Nair and Ruby in other important roles. Music director Bijibal has composed the music on the lyrics jotted down by Anil Panachooran. P. Sukumaran is capturing the flick in his camera. Passenger is said to be a family entertainer with a focus on humour.

Sreenivasan turns blind

Veteran Malayalam actor-producer-writer-director Sreenivasan will now be seen portraying the character of a blind person in his upcoming flick All The Best. Swathy Bhaskar would be directing the movie which has Sneha as the main lead actress. The director has himself scripted the film. The other star cast includes, Kalabhavan Mani, Mukesh, Innocent, Siddhique and Suraaj Venjaaramoodu. This is not the first time that Sreenivasan is playing a blind man’s character. Around 16 years ago he has played a blind man’s character in Varabhalam which was directed by Thaha. After being dragged for more than six months, Nemam Pushparaj’s Banaras is now all set to hit the theatres on the 7th of April. Vineeth and Kavya Madhavan are in the lead. This is for the first time in her career that Kavya is portraying the role of a classical dancer while Hari is playing the role of a research student on folk dances. Remake of Bobbili Puli

There are rumours going on that legendary Telugu actor N.T. Rama Rao’s super hit Bobbili Puli (1982), scripted and directed by veteran Narayana Rao Dasari, is to be remade by his grandson Junior NTR, again under the direction of Narayana Rao Dasari. It is learnt that Junior NTR expressed joy when Dasari Narayana Rao proposed the project. The film is expected to hit the floors in the month of March. Recently Junior NTR met Dasari Narayana Rao at his residence to congratulate him on winning the NTR award for his outstanding contribution to Telugu cinema.
