LONDON - Actor Zach Galifianakis of “Hangover” fame shocked television viewers when he smoke a joint during a political chat show.

He appeared on the show “Real Time With Bill Maher” to promote his film “Due Date” and to make a point about the upcoming vote for marijuana legalisation, reports dailymail.co.uk.

“It’s a tricky thing politically to jump on that bandwagon because I think that maybe people still see it as taboo,” said Galifianakis.

He continued smoking as the political debate on the show went on.

The actor’s fellow guest Margaret Hoover, a conservative news reporter, smelled the cigarette and verified that it was marijuana.

It is believed this is for the first time anyone has smoked marijuana live on TV in the US.

The plan to legalise marijuana is expected to fail when millions of Californians go to the polls Tuesday to vote in the mid-term elections.
