LONDON - Filmmaker J.R.R. Tolkien’s new film “The Hobbit” will now reportedly be released in 3D.

The project has received a number of setbacks in the lead-up to its production, including director Guillermo Del Toro walking away from the film and parent company MGM’s financial troubles.

According to the New York Times, the two proposed film adaptations of “The Hobbit” will be made in 3D, despite early statements made by panelists at the San Diego Comic-Con this year that the film would remain in traditional 2D, reports digitalspy.co.uk.

It is expected that an official announcement regarding production of the films will be made in the next few days, with reports indicating that Peter Jackson is close to officially signing as a replacement director.

The first Hobbit film is reportedly scheduled to be released Dec 12, 2012.
