June 2, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Brad Pitt has brought the rights of the novel The Imperfectionist, through his Plan B production company. The novel which is based on author Tom Rachman’s experiences as a wire-service reporter in Italy, deals with the troubles faced by the staff of an English-language newspaper in Rome.
The Imperfectionist is Rachman’s literary debut who graduated from Columbia School of Journalism. It was published earlier this year and generally got positive reviews.
The plot deals with the story of this fifty-year-old enterprise which is suffering from readership decline. It follows the life of reporters who honor dramas in their personal lives over the dramas that they are suppose to write about.
The employees of enterprise consists editor-in-chief, Kathleen who is distraught from a betrayal in her open marriage; the lazy obituary writer, Arthur who goes through a transformation after a personal tragedy and lot of others who are suffering mid-life crisis, OCD etc. All of them come together in the time of adversity.
The large number of characters in the novel surely demands a starry ensemble drama. But as of now there have been no reports of Pitt essaying any role in the film, apart from producing it. His company is also setting up Jonathan Lethem’s novel Fortress of Solitude, with Alfonso Gomez Rejon in charge of writing and direction.
