LONDON - Hollywood actor Jake Gyllenhaal used to turn down roles involving a British accent in the past fearing he can’t do it but says he rose to the challenge for new movie “Prince of Persia: Sands of Time”.

The US actor overcame his fear that he would be unable to pull off an English dialect to play Prince Dastan in the new movie, reports celebrifi.com.

“It was something that had stopped me from doing other roles in the past because I didn’t know if I could pull it off,” he said.

“My sister Maggie always did a great British accent and I always would try and it would sound really bad, like some mix between German and Texan,” he added.

Gyllenhaal admits he found tackling the accent a “challenge” because he was worried about offending Britons.

“I worked very hard at it and was worried because I can’t tell you how much I respect the British accent, and how much I know the British respect the accent,” he said.

“I recognise it for all the wonderful qualities and politeness that is the British culture. I know they can be tough on that too and it was a challenge,” he added.
