Opera Singer Simionato Dies

Italian opera star GIULIETTA SIMIONATO has died a week before her 100th birthday.
Simionato, acknowledged as one of the greatest opera singers in post-war Italy, passed away in Rome on Wednesday (05May10).
She would have turned 100 on 12 May (10).
A statement from Milan’s La Scala opera house reads, “Giulietta Simionato has definitively entered our memories and the history of the opera.”
She began her career singing at La Scala in 1936 and toured around the world before retiring in 1966.
