‘father Of Bossa Nova’ Alf Loses Cancer Battle

Brazilian singer/songwriter and ‘father of Bossa Nova’ JOHNNY ALF has lost his battle with prostate cancer.

Alf, born Alfredo Jose da Silva, died on 4 March (10) in Santo Andre, Brazil, just outside Sao Paulo. He was 80.

His best-known songs include: Eu e a Brisa (Me and the Breeze), Ilusao a Toa (Carefree Illusion) and Rapaz de Bem (Well-Intentioned Guy), a 1955 single widely regarded as the first bossa nova on record.

In 1990, he recorded Olhos Negros (Black Eyes), featuring duets with artists who helped to make the genre famous worldwide, including Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque and Gal Costa.

Alf left no immediate survivors.
