“Road Movie” Review

MUMBAI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- The critics who have got the first glimpse of the eagerly awaited film named ‘Road, Movie‘ just cannot stop raving about it. They are of the opinion that after making critically acclaimed and award-winning movies like ‘English August’ and ‘Split Wide Open’, director Dev Benegal has come up with a winner again. However, one should not confuse it with Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Road’ that hit the theaters a few years back or ‘The Road’ by John Hillcoat. Dev Benegal’s film takes the viewers through a funny and frothy roller coaster ride instead. The protagonist played by Abhay Deol sets off on a journey as he is not interested in becoming a salesman in his father’s company that makes hair oil. He starts the journey in a Chevy truck.
The old truck used to be a touring cinemascope earlier but the protagonist does not know it initially. He comes across a boy who asks for a lift and he agrees reluctantly. When the truck breaks down he gets angry with the boy. However, the boy fetches a mechanic. Vishnu picks him up as well. The threesome is joined by a gypsy woman who guides them to find water. A chemistry develops between Vishnu and the gypsy woman. The end of the film is also interesting and the characters play their parts really well. The reviews on the film ‘Road Movie’ are mostly encouraging and Mohammad Faizal’s sharp tongued village boy act has drawn him applauses.
As for Abhay Deol, he proves his mettle once again after the critically acclaimed “Dev D.” Tannishtha Chatterjee and Satish Kaushik also complement him quite well. ‘Road Movie’ is an interesting experimental flick and the film festival buffs are expected to lap it up generously.
