Irreverent motor show TOP GEAR has fought off competition from DR. WHO and THE X FACTOR to be named Britain’s greatest TV programme of the decade.

The long-running weekly series, fronted by Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond, is officially the greatest show of the 2000s, according to a new Channel 4 poll.

Top Gear has also found success overseas - the show has become a big cult hit throughout Europe and in America.

Reality show The Apprentice came in second, while cult sci-fi show Dr. Who was named the third best programme.

Britain?s Got Talent, which this year (09) discovered Susan Boyle, and comedy show QI rounded out the top five.

The X Factor, The Simpsons and Life On Mars also featured in the top 10.
