Vatican condemns New Moon as a “deviant moral vacuum”

LONDON - Vampire film ‘New Moon,’ the sequel to ‘Twilght,’ has come under fire from the Vatican church.
Monsignor Franco Perazzolo, of the Pontifical Council of Culture, described the film as a “deviant moral vacuum”.
“This theme of vampires in Twilight combines a mixture of excesses that as ever is aimed at young people and gives a heavy esoteric element,” the Daily Express quoted him as saying.
He added: “Men and women are transformed with horrible masks and it is once again that age-old trick or ideal formula of using extremes to make an impact at the box office.
“This film is nothing more than a moral vacuum with a deviant message and as such is something that should be of concern.”
However, the film grossed 1.8million pounds at the box office on the opening day in Italy. (ANI)

I have been a Catholic priest for 35 years. I was unaware of the Vatican’s statements when I went to see the movie. I thought of it as harmless fun and gave it a positive review on my YouTube account and dozens of other video sharing sites. I also gave a positive review to the first movie, Twilight |

On this issue the Vatican is correct. This movie, the one that came before it and the series of books they are based on, has a dangerous message for young impressionable women about what qualities attractive in a potential mate. Apparently a dead but animated sociopath who can control the animal within himself (just barely) is a suitable partner and sexy. That the female character Belle “Loves” this creature as her one and only “soul mate” makes her fetish of choice necrophilia. (He is dead) This is dangerous in that there are many charming sociopaths among us who aren’t able to control their darker impulses but they will have sway over impressionable young women and older women who are still chasing after their long past youth. The love of the bad boy needs to be put to rest with the sociopathic non-community building attributes he possesses. The sociopaths have brought us all to global economic meltdown, injustice worldwide, manufactured poverty, the list is endless. To quell these negative trends women, future mothers have got to stop looking to bad men as potential mates. All they can provide are the bad habits that plague us all. |
