Sixties rocker STEVE FERGUSON has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 60.

Ferguson was a founding member of long-running jazz/rock group NRBQ, which formed in 1967.

The band’s music is credited with influencing the likes of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards and Elvis Costello.

NRBQ never achieved a big chart hit, but attained cult status in the U.S.

Ferguson quit the group in 1970 and went on to perform and record with his own groups.

In 2004 he reunited with his former bandmates for a 35th anniversary concert and reteamed with NRBQ keyboardist Terry Adams in 2006 to record the album Louisville Sluggers.

Ferguson died on 7 October (09) according to an announcement on his personal website. A MySpace.com message lists the cause as cancer.

He is survived by his wife Sheri, a son and two stepchildren.
