Filmmaker PIERRE FALARDEAU has lost his battle with cancer. He was 62.

He passed away on Friday (25Sep09) in Montreal, Canada.

Falardeau’s films dealt with issues of Quebec nationalism and he regularly appeared in the Canadian press to speak out about the issues.

He won a Genie Award in 1983 for the first film in his Elvis Gratton trilogy, but went on to boycott the competition in 2002.

Premier of Quebec Jean Charest says, “Mr. Falardeau, we know, was a pamphleteer. He was a man who liked controversy, who had very strong opinions and who expressed them using a shock formula. But his artistic works were significant.”
