John Travolta and Denzel Washington’s latest offering, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, also debuted this week slipping straight in at number three with $2.67 million (£1.78 million).
Romantic comedy The Proposal, starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, dropped two places into fourth, taking $2.24 million (£1.49 million), while Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs also slipped two places to round out the top five, with $1.71 million (£1.14 million).
There were two other new entries in the top ten - Will Ferrell’s comedy Land of the Lost opened in sixth position and Coco Before Chanel debuted at number nine.
