LONDON - Former James Bond star Sean Connery has been bestowed with an honorary degree by a university in Edinburgh in his native Scotland.

The veteran actor was presented with an honorary doctorate from Edinburgh Napier University in a ceremony in his hometown Friday, reports imdb.com.

Connery, who began his career as an Edinburgh milkman, donned the instuition’s red, blue and white robes to pick up the award, and used his speech to praise the educational system in Scotland.

“I know I could not be standing here today receiving this splendid honor if I had not learned to read and write at the age of five. What is interesting in all of this is that I never realised it until I was in my 70s,” he told the audience.
